It
is a great pleasure and honor to open
this joint Congress on Innovation in
Medical Sciences organized by members
of Hallym University and Columbia University
to commemorate the 10th anniversary
of the death of Doctor Duck-Sun Yoon,
the founder of Hallym University and
Honorary Chairman of the Ilsong Educational
Foundation, the major sponsors of this
meeting.
I
first met Doctor Duck-Sun Yoon in the
early 80's through his son who worked
with me in New York and who has so brilliantly
carried on and expanded his father's
work and vision, both at Hallym University
and at the Ilsong Foundation.
Doctor
Duck-Sun Yoon finished his surgical
training initially in Korea, and subsequently
in Bridgeport Hospital in the United
States. He returned to Korea in
1956 and was named as Chief of the Department
of Surgery for the next 10 years at
the Catholic University College of Medicine.
At the same time he was Vice Dean
of the medical school and the President
of the Catholic Medical Center. He
had the vision of the need for regionalization
of complex medical care and the realization
that traditional medical training may
not be sufficient for future health
needs. He therefore embarked on
building from scratch a network of hospitals
equipped with the most modern devices
and staffed by the brightest young specialists.
These have remained his legacy,
expanded and improved through the efforts
of his son, our host.
To
satisfy the urgent need for high level
education in medicine and other fields,
Doctor Duck-Sun Yoon led the organization
and creation of Hallym College, which
opened in 1982 and became a University
in 1988. With the effort of many,
the inspiration of the father and subsequent
organizational skill of the son, Hallym
University has become one of the leading
educational institutions in Korea and
most recently, under the guidance of
Chairman Yoon, has assumed an important
international position through its affiliation
with Columbia University.
It
is only fitting that this Symposium,
in memory of Doctor Duck-Sun Yoon, focuses
on innovations in medical sciences since
Doctor Duck-Sun Yoon focused his life's
work on health care delivery systems
and education. His accomplishments
have been too numerous to summarize,
but I do want to point out that one
of his greatest accomplishments has
been to imbue his son, Chairman Yoon,
with the drive, dedication, courage
and vision to continue the work that
he began in the 70's. This has now resulted
in even greater and more remarkable
accomplishments in heath care delivery
and in education, and in internationalizing
the effort in this rapidly shrinking
world.
I
look forward to the presentations by
both my American and Korean colleagues
which illustrate innovations in medical
and biologic sciences which already
have, or will have, a significant impact
on the health care that we deliver.
I am sorry that Dr. Duck-Sun Yoon cannot
be here in person, but I assure you
that he is here in spirit, and that
he is very proud of what has been accomplished.
